The primary function of a build plate is to provide a perfectly (or almost perfectly) flat surface for the bottom layer of your print. The second function is usually to provide an adhesive surface for the extruded plastic to form a temporary bond with during a print, or a surface onto which an adhesive can be applied.
In short, the build plate is a flat surface that printed objects will stick to during a print. Without this, your printer would need some sort of stasis field to hold a print in place while your printer fabricates objects in midair. As cool as that sounds, that sort of technology doesn’t exist yet (unfortunately), so we’re all stuck printing on glass and the like.
If long 3D prints are made with very abrasive materials, the recommended nozzle is a Hardened steel nozzle. If approved materials are used for contact with skin and food, the only compatible nozzle to maintain this quality is a Stainless Steel Nozzle 0.40 mm.
Since 3D printer nozzles are not universal, there are a lot of things to consider before buying a new nozzle. Always be sure to check if a nozzle is compatible with your specific printer. Also, stick to the standard brass nozzles for the non-abrasive filaments.
There isn’t a specific time frame in which you should change or replace your nozzle, but generally you should change your nozzle every 3-6 months. This really depends on how often you are using your 3D printer, what kind of filaments you are using, and how high or low the quality of your nozzle is.
You’ll want to determine the nozzle flow rate at gallons per minute (gpm). To find that, start with your application rate in gallons per acre (gpa). Next, find an efficient and safe ground speed in miles per hour (mph).

A 3D printer’s heating block is the part of the extruder where the nozzle meets the thermal barrier tube. Contained within the heating block is also the heater cartridge and thermocouple. Typically made of aluminum, the part functions literally as a block of heat, melting the filament as it passes through the thermal tube to be extruded out of the nozzle.
